3,585 Texas Dentists Are Over 60. Here's What DSO Teams Need to Know.
Using ProviderSignal data, we identified 3,585 Texas dentists with estimated ages over 60. This cohort represents the largest near-term acquisition opportunity in the state, with 1,670 licenses expiring within 24 months.

We ran the numbers across ProviderSignal's provider database. 272,717 dental providers nationwide, with 14,612 Texas providers enriched with state board data from the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Using graduation year plus 26 as an age proxy (the standard dental school completion age), we identified 3,585 Texas dentists estimated to be over 60 as of April 2026.
The profile of this cohort is striking:
- 1,821 are sole proprietors (50.8% of the cohort). No existing organizational structure to complicate a deal.
- 1,670 have licenses expiring within 24 months (46.6%). A concrete timeline pressure that correlates with sell decisions.
- 2,653 are general dentists (74.0% of the cohort). The bread-and-butter practice type for platform DSO acquisitions.
- The remaining 932 (26.0%) are specialists: 309 orthodontists, 189 pediatric dentists, 187 oral surgeons, 105 endodontists, 88 prosthodontists, 25 periodontists, and a long tail of dental public health and maxillofacial specialists. These are high-value specialty bolt-ons for DSO platforms.

Methodology: Cohort counted via SQL query against the ProviderSignal providers table on April 11, 2026. Filters: state=TX, graduation_year ≤ 1992 (age proxy of 60+), dentist-only (excludes dental hygienists and dental assistants). Cohort totals may shift slightly with each weekly NPI refresh and daily TSBDE sync.
